1 – 01 So be it

Gunther Fett stared blankly at the white wall in front of him, waiting for someone to call him, just like a patient waiting to be called in a hospital.

The ceiling, floor, walls, and illumination were completely white, even the chair on which he was sitting didn’t have any different color. The place looked exactly like the cleanest hospital, overhauled by a manager with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. But there were no nurses, only two guards armed with white armor and helmets guarding a white door. From any point of view, it reveals weirdness. But Gunther Fett doesn't care at all since his plan was coming here to die。

He could speak before his first birthday, and by the age of three he had learned how add and subtract all by himself. By the age of four, he could recite the periodic table and master arithmetic. His parents, who were both professors in college, were surprised and delighted by his talent. They had high hopes for him.

However, his performance had been absurd since elementary school. He often seemed to just wake up from a day dream during class, and all kinds of strange behaviors are endless. When he was questioned, he pretended to be innocent and showed an attitude of knowing nothing. His parents noticed similar phenomena at home. But after consulting doctors, therapists, psychics, priests, and try all kinds of alternative medicines, Gunther Fett remained unchanged and showed zero improvement at all.

Although there are some problems with his behavior, Gunther Fett excels academically, not only in terms of knowledge, but also in arts and sports. Since people commonly thought that good grades represent good students, they recognized his behavior as quirks of genius. Instead of criticizing him, they even began to turn a blind eye.

However, as he grew older, Gunther Fett's "quirks" became more and more bizarre. Since the third and fourth grades , Gunther Fett often spoke and acted strangely during classes. Once in an exam, He returned the test paper with a single line on it: "Are you trying to insult the emperor by such questions?" He had even broken into a farm to steal watermelons. Such actions were too outrageous for the school to ignore. What make things worse was that even busted right in the action, he still shamelessly denied everything, claiming that he didn't know about it or do it.

The school had no choice, even considering the reputation and pleading of his parents, they still gave him an admonition. Time after time, admonitions became minor demerit; minor demerits became major demerit. Again and again, His parents were heartbroken and exhausted, but Gunther Fett became more and more serious. When the time moved to junior high, Gunther Fett could only attend a school known by “anyone can get in, anyone can graduate”. Even so, Gunther Fett's had to drop out before expelled.

Without at least a junior high school degree and with extremely absurd behavior, Gunther Fett couldn’t find any decent job. Even he luckily got one, he couldn't keep it for long. He kept messing around and denying everything. His parents got stuck in disappointment and frustration. But Gunther Fett is their only son, the apple of their eyes, so they kept helping him, apologizing for him, and saving his ass.

Slowly, the family went downhill. By the time Gunther Fett was allowed to drink legally, his father collapsed and became bed resident. His mother had to work twice or even trice harder for them, and was transformed from a vigorous professor to a worn-out woman.

No one knows that, the one person who felt the most innocent and heart-wrenching toward the situation was Gunther Fett himself. As far as he could remember, he often spaced out suddenly, and when he came back to his senses, he found himself in a different location, completely unaware of what had happened in between. When his parents, teachers or friends asked him “what’s wrong?”, he could not give them a proper explanation since he didn’t know either.

Thanks to his talent and extensive reading, he soon learned a medical term called “multiple personality disorder” that might explain his condition. However, by the time he knew about it, it had deteriorated to a level that prevented him from getting help. Every time he tried to mention it to the experts his parents arranged for him, he switched to another personality out of sudden. And then again, when he came back to his senses, he was just surprised by a question “how did I get here?”, and suffered from stinky eyes of those who noticed him.

When he tried to tell his patients, they had lost their trust on him. And when he wanted to say, was speaking, or had just finished speaking, he switched personality again, which made his word inconsistent and conflicted with each other. This made them believing he was vexatious once more.

Failure after failure, he understood that he had to get in line with other personalities before he could succeed. So he prepared a note book, introducing himself and writing about the “multiple personality disorder” theory on the first page. Then he sit on a chair and stared at that page, waiting for the other personality to take over.

As expected, it happened. When Gunther Fett was himself again, he found several different hand writings on the notebook. That’s when he realized the situation was way worse than he had speculated. He did not suffered from dual-personality disorder, there were six personalities in him, including himself. That’s probably why the switching happened more and more often.

From the words on the note book, he learned that other personalities somewhat noticed the abnormalities, one of them even came up with the “multiple personality disorder” theory as well. However, when he proposed that they should collaborate to seek help, that one immediately pointed out that “if he is cured, we will all disappear!” so all other personalities opposed his suggestion and decided to sabotage his plan. After that, the chances for him to succeed went from slim to zero.

As a result, Gunther Fett became more and more stressful and his conditions got worse even faster. By the age of eighteen, he had seventeen personalities within his body. This meant the time he being himself got shorter and shorter. The collapse of his father, the sadness on his mother’s face, both made me harder and harder to face the real world. At the end, he even felt that it is easier to avoid these by being substituted by other personalities.

Finally, a thought came to his mind: “that’s it…it’s the only way…papa and mama would be sad for a while, but they would get better afterward…”

But it's not that simple, just like he fails in everything else, he was not successful in this one as well, no matter how hard he tried.

He wanted to jump, but ended up holding many shopping bags in the department store, leaving behind a huge credit card debt for his parents. He had no idea when and how he got sixteen credit cards.

He planned to take pills, but woke up with two handful condoms and lubricant gels in front of a drug store. Passengers looked at him with judgement. He decided not to care what another personality wanted to do with these.

He tried to slice his wrist, but found himself peeling a watermelon while his parents stared at him with dead eyes. He could not understood why this character wanted to remove the outer layer of a watermelon with a knife, when there are apples right on the table.

He lied a railway and then re-painted the whole train station. He touched the electricity plug and then changed all the light balls in the house. He tried, again and again, he tried, but success seemed far far away. So far away that even his parents hadn’t noticed his true intention.

Two months ago, Gunther Fett got a job. It was one of the few jobs he could get and with a possibility to complete… a test subject of a clinical trial in the college where his parents worked.

The experiment was simple but well-paid. Gunther Fett was asked to wear an equipment that scans brain activity, while receiving sound and light stimulation. He had to finish some tasks and answer questions during the process as well. Although Gunther Fett blacked out every couple minute, he still managed to get the job down, mostly because other characters didn’t realized what’s going on and all decided to play along with “those in white coats so they won’t notice something’s wrong with us…me”.

Gunther Fett got paid. Last time he received any sort of payment was eight months plus three days ago. And the money was very good, equaled to a regular monthly income. His mother was so delighted and decided to hold a party for him. His father participated with high spirit but soon fainted away after Gunther Fett looked at a piece of cake and said “let’s find out if you are good enough for the royal taste of the one and only, the alpha and omega, the omniscient and omnipotent Dragon Emperor of Xie.”

Yes, one of Gunther Fett’s many personalities was a end-stage case of “middle school 2nd year syndrome”, with incurable conceit and narcissism.

Two months after the experiment, the institute hosted it sent a mail to Gunther Fett, sincerely asking him to come back for another experiment. There was a check inside the envelope. The number on it was the sum of yearly income of Gunther Fett’s parents.

It is too good to be true and There must be something weird about it. Gunther Fett knew that, but he still decided to take the money. He used the money to buy a high insurance policy for himself, and set the beneficiaries to be his parents. He then attended the research with worst hope.

Things went exactly as Gunther Fett predicted.

The armored vehicles that came to pick him up looked more heavily defended than the money carriers. Weird.

Along the way, there were turns and detours from time to time, and the van finally drove into the inaccessible mountains. Very weird.

The level of biosecurity in the research institution is even more exaggerated than the level 4 laboratory where the parents worked. Super weird.

The people who were called into the lab never returned, and those who were afraid and wanted to quit were forced to go inside by the guards. Weird to the extreme.

Gunther Fett couldn’t care less. he would even be disappointed if not so, because he couldn’t afford the next insurance fee. When he was finally summoned, the scene inside that door made him feel relieved.

It was same snow-blind-inducing white in the laboratory. There was a white desk with two people in white coat, probably researchers, sitting behind it. Four security guards in white armors, helmets and weapons stood by at the four corners of the room. The situation was way beyond weird.

The researcher to the left asked him to sit down and said: “Hi, how do you do? I am Dr. John. Can you understand me? Although I can speak a little of your language, I am afraid that you can not fully understand what I am going to say.”

Gunther Fett nodded, he could converse in English fluently at the age of ten.

Receiving a positive response, Dr. John. said happily: “glad to know that you can understand English. This gentleman sitting beside me is Dr. Richard. We lead a project involving improvement of human brain. Since age of knowledge explosion, it has been impossible for human beings to learn such an excessive amount of information in mind. That’s why we try to input data directly into human brains.”

“The implantation has gained initial success. we transformed data into hexadecimal digital codes and input them into subjects’ brains, along with a translation program while implanting the ability to interpret the code together. Unfortunately, most subjects couldn’t handle so much unfamiliar information just popping out in their cognition after waking up, they had either severe seizure attacks or mental breakdowns which were uncontrollable by any kind of medication. We… we had no choices other than helping them rest…forever…”

Dr. John described an awfully terrible story in a flat tone of "this is not a big deal". There was a deliberate pause when he speaking of this, and the guards standing in the four corners simultaneously moved their hands to the white batons and stun rifles, seeming that many subjects couldn't help but panic when they heard this.

Gunther Fett kept a poker faces, seeming saying “so what?”.

Dr. John seemed a little disappointed seeing Gunther Fett so calm and care-free. He cleared his throat and said: “Ahem… We reviewed our experiments trying to find the reasons for failure, and concluded that the normal human brain could not withstand such a large amount of information. That’s why we started to measure brain activities. We aimed to find people with high brain activity for our experiments.”

Dr. Richard, who had been sitting quietly on the side, took out a report from under the desk, turned a few pages casually, and then said: “Your test results are amazing, with such a high activity level… it seems like your brain is used by two or three people.”

Gunther Fett responded blandly: “wo or three people huh? Are you sure? I sincerely believe there must be some mistakes.”

Dr. Richard grinned and said: "That's impossible, that instrument is the most cutting-edge technology of our country. You don't need to deny it."

Dr. John picked up and said, "Now, we're going to implant knowledge into your brain. There are three steps in this operation. we will activate your brain function first, following by data implantation. We will observe, measure and record your brain function afterward."

Dr. Richard said with a grim expression: “ready or not, let’s go!”

The guards behind Gunther Fett stepped forward to grab his arms. They were surprised that Gunther Fett didn’t trying to struggle, just said: “So be it!”
