Major Japanese convenience store chains, such as Lawson and FamilyMart are taking steps to reduce plastic waste by switching to paper packaging.
A number of Lawson outlets have gradually began switching to paper containers for some rice bowl and dishes. The chain will also introduce paper coffee cups by the end of next month. It expects the measure will reduce plastic waste by about 250 tons per year.
FamilyMart is making a similar action. It started opting for bento containers made entirely of paper except for the plastic lid.
The amount of plastic waste has increased in Japan because more people buy cooked meals instead of dining out amid the coronavirus pandemic.
