Hello everyone, my name is Jhou Ya-yi, also known as @ga0620ryTW on twitter. I am a Taiwanese player and start playing VGC since Sword/Shield. Although many tournaments were cancelled during the COVID-19,Taiwan was relatively lucky to have two regional level tournaments during this time, but I didn't have a good result in both of them. At the end of August, I made it to Week 2 of the Asia Player Cup with a 6-1 record in the Taiwan preliminaries, but unfortunately I had to give up my qualification for personal reasons. So this was actually my first experience with Top Cut, and I was very lucky to make it to the final.

Team:
The official announcement was made three weeks before the tournament.  The first two weeks I was playing with the Zacian, including the Sun-Zacian / Dragapult-Zacian / LapDog / AST Revolution champion team. Zacian is powerful, but I didn't play it very well.
With a week left, I started to find my instructor and good friend @brandontiongvgc to discuss and practice, in which he asked me if I wanted to try the Solgaleo, and after discussion the team  probably looked like this:
   or
Support Spectrier activate Solgaleo's Weakness Policy, Tapu Fini prevent status condition, Garchomp and Zapdos aginst weather teams, the last one depends on what you want. Incineroar's Intimidate and Parting shot to reposition, provide Fake out pressure and fire attack. Grimmsnarl set up screens and provide speed control.
This team I played quite handy, but the problem is hard to against weather team. The Global Exhibition just ended and the environment was flooded with Groudon and Kyorge. Whether I was practicing with @brandontiongvgc or testing on SD, it was extremely countered hard by it, so in the end I gave up using it.
The last thing is to find a team to use from the spare team. I make a choice between Zacian, which I practice a lot in first two weeks, or Kyorge core, which I play the most in series 8.

This is the team built by @yanagiT_poke, a Japanese player who used it to won the Victory Road Circuit Qualirfier #3 in series 8. Sun and Rain double weather, Tornadus and Porygon2 provide Taiwind and Trick Room. Finally, Urshifu as the team's lack of physical attackers and kill low hp pokemon.

The reasons I chose this team, first is expected Sun core may be a lot. The second is I played in the Asia Player Cup qualifying Top Cut is also using the Venu-koal+Porygon2 team, as well as before the early s8 has formed the Tornadus-Kyorge and achieved good results in some competition.

the original author's team report (in Japanese):https://liberty-note.com/2021/03/03/vr-tour3-winner/

252+ SpA Venusaur Max Flare vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zacian-Crowned in Sun: 182-216 (108.3 - 128.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Venusaur Max Geyser vs. 252 HP / 92 SpD Incineroar in Rain: 204-240 (100.9 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

I think EVs is very common. In terms of moves selection, I prefer Leaf Storm than Franzy Plant, I would rather have a little less damage than a round of inaction. The reason I chose Sludge Bomb instead of Earth Power is in my personal understanding, this team is more inclined to strong offense, and this team is almost special attackers. But after the competition, my experience is I always fight in Trick Room, and set Trick Room twice many times, Max Earth to buff special defense might be a good choice too.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 244 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Porygon2 in Rain: 160-190 (83.7 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Urshifu Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 148+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 116-140 (60.7 - 73.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 148+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 176-210 (92.1 - 109.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
+1 252 Atk Zacian-Crowned Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 148+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 144-170 (75.3 - 89%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The MVP in this tournament. Ability depend on personal preference, I only have one attack move, so I choose to use Trace. This time really play a great effect that it trace Prankster twice, Intimidate three times, and Triage once. Eerie Impulse has a  good traction effect on Tapu Fini which is difficult to deal with fast. Attack move whether it is Tri Attack or Foul Play have it effectiveness, and I end up keeping the
Ice Beam, it have good effect on Venusaur, flying type like Thundurus, and even Eternatus.

Damage Cal after Tournament:
252 SpA Life Orb Transistor Regieleki Helping Hand Max Lightning vs. 244 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 181-214 (94.7 - 112%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Dragon Fang Eternatus Helping Hand Dynamax Cannon vs. 244 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 112-133 (58.6 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Transistor Regieleki Thunderbolt vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Kyogre: 146-174 (70.8 - 84.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Transistor Regieleki Thunderbolt vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Kyogre: 190-226 (92.2 - 109.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

+1 252 Atk Zacian-Crowned Behemoth Blade vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Dynamax Kyogre: 170-202 (41.2 - 49%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Dynamax Kyogre: 222-264 (53.8 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Mystic Water Kyogre Max Geyser vs. 4 HP / 12 SpD Assault Vest Dynamax Thundurus in Rain: 220-261 (70.9 - 84.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

EVs: Overspeed Calyrex-Shadow under Taiwind, slower 1 speed than Venusaur.
I didn't put a lot of EVs on speed, so I more often fight under Trick Room not Tailwind. The choice between Ice Been and Thunder, both of them has it effectiveness. The reason I choose Ice Beam that Thunder has it risk when it is not raining, and Max Lighting will crash my Sleep Powder.

Damage Cal after Tournament:
252+ Atk Rillaboom-Gmax Grassy Glide vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Kyogre in Grassy Terrain: 182-216 (88.3 - 104.8%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Water Bubble Araquanid Liquidation vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Kyogre: 59-69 (28.6 - 33.4%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO

These four moves is my personal preference. Protect can have a chance to set up Tailwind again, and the opponent won't expect Tornadus has Protect. Icy Wind can speed control after using Tailwind without
Dynamax, and the main attacker in this environment is on the slow side, so I think Icy Wind need to configure.

Nothing Special. I think Burning Jealousy and Heat Wave depend on personal preference.

Damage Cal after Tournament:
252+ SpA Charcoal Torkoal Max Flare vs. 236 HP / 4 SpD Dynamax Glastrier in Sun: 350-414 (85.3 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Common lead:

+
I think it's a wide and flexible opening, but some times it won't give you a huge advantage .

+
I rarely use this opening in this tournament. The main reason is that everyone know how to against this opening, another reason is I'm more used to fight under Trick Room.

Hard to deal with:
+
Both Dynamax Venusaur or Kyorge have their awkward points. I think against common Zacian core is 50-50 or a little disadvantage. Thndurus gives me a lot of pressure and I can't knock down Thundurus easily.

Tournament Run:

R1              NS
R2              WW              草蛇
R3             WLW           莊展榮
R4             WLW           邱厚文
R5             LWW            董亦
R6               LL              王易樑
Top 16       LWW           曾彥融
Top 8         LWW           蔡千騫
Top 4         WLW           杜震超
Final            LL              劉建廷

Conclusion:
I didn't expect I can get into Top Cut in such huge tournament, and I just can't believe I did it. Venu-koal with Kyorge has a lot of possibility but also has it disadvantage. Thanks to everyone who had read this team report.
