與Coat of Plate一樣，
最初是裝備在衣服或是Cloth Armor之外的鎧甲，
不過在Chain Mail普及後，
Brigandine變成輔助性質之用，
將其纏繞、包覆在鎧甲上，
以增加防禦效果。
Brigandine的特點在於裝備後方便活動，
以及容易維修、保養，
在戰場上被當作不可或缺的高耐久性防具而長時間被使用。
雖然之後的防具製作技術進步，
製作出幾乎可以保護全身的Plato Armor，
但仍有步兵或輕裝騎士偏好Brigandine。
Brigandine的製法是先將帆布或是皮革縫製成背心（vest）狀，
再將長方形的金屬片鉚接在其中以增加強度，
有些會將天鵝絨或是金箔裝飾在外增加美觀度。
Brigandine與Coat of Plate相似，
也可說是由Coat of Plate發展而來的，
與Coat of Plate相異的地方在於，
Brigandine使用的金屬片較小，
且數量也比較多。
