艾拉妮絲出生於加拿大渥太華，並以童星以及偶像歌手的身分出道，1994年搬到美國洛杉磯，並開始嘗試創作搖滾樂。1995年推出的《小碎藥丸》搖滾專輯至今賣過3000萬張，是史上銷量最高的唱片之一，同時也以21歲之齡成為葛萊美獎史上最年輕的年度專輯獎得主。大碟中第一主打《你應該知道》中情緒強烈的歌詞與旋律，使她被媒體稱為「第一憤怒夫人」。因為此唱片極為成功，她後來的專輯都沒有突破這個紀錄。她是女性搖滾樂的代表之一，創作的詞曲充滿對女性主義、男權社會等思考。她和另一位女性主義藝人多莉·艾莫絲是好友。
