Science and Religion: Taiwan vs USA

To get this note started, let me make two interesting observations about religion in Taiwan

文章一開始 讓我分享兩個有關於台灣宗教的觀察

*there is no public controversy over teaching evolution in school. 

*social issues are not argued over religiously. Politics is very separate from faith. 

"在校內教導演化論不會產生社會公眾爭議"

"社會議題不會在宗教性上爭論, 政治與信仰非常分離"

Hmm... are the Taiwanese somehow more scientific and rational than Americans? Or are the Taiwanese less faithful than Americans? 

恩... 難道台灣人比美國人更為理性科學思考嗎? 或是台灣人相對於美國人比較沒有信仰?

 I would say "no" to both questions. The main religion in Taiwan is a mix of Daoism and Buddhism. Almost all Taiwanese participate in some kind of religious ritual several times a year, whether it is lightening incense, burning paper money, praying to idols, or offering animal sacrifices to the gods (really not that exotic, animal sacrifices are more like the Thanksgiving turkey than Abraham's son). 

 以上兩個問題我可能都得說  "no". 台灣主要的宗教是混合道教與佛教. 幾乎所有台灣人每年都會數次參與某些宗教活動, 不論是點點香,燒燒紙錢,對偶像崇拜(譯按:西方宗教大禁),抑或是對神明動物活體獻祭(這其實真的不是那種很奇怪的獻祭. 動物宰殺獻祭其實比較像是美國感恩節的火雞, 而不是像是聖經故事中亞伯拉罕聽從上帝而活體獻祭了自己兒子那麼恐怖.)(譯按:此段我直接將英文文章含意整個放入譯文,故與原本我堂弟寫得不是100%同)

So the Taiwanese are religious because they believe in supernatural entities and the ability to communicate with those entities. So why doesn't the Taiwanese feel threatened by scientific advances, such as the theory of evolution? Why does the Taiwanese keep celebrating Lunar Day, when all Taiwanese knows there is no rabbit or Hot Moon Chick on the moon? 

所以台灣人是有信仰的, 因為他們相信一些超自然的存在,而且相信能夠與這些個體溝通. 但是為什麼台灣人不會認為被科學演進而感到威脅? 例如天演論? 為什麼台灣人雖然不相信在月亮上有超辣的妹妹或是兔子卻依然慶祝中秋節?

Well, the answers is probably due to a combination of factors, which includes: Confucianism valuing the scholar over the monk, lack of the West's intense obsession with the singular truth, and the heavy ritualization of Taiwanese religious practice. 

恩, 問題的答案可能受到許多不同的因素影響,這可能包含儒家認為學者的價值大於僧侶, 而且缺乏像西方相信一個唯一的真理, 而且台灣的宗教行為已經高度儀式化.

* Scholar > Monk

"學者 > 僧侶"

In Confucianism, scholars are the most prized social group in society, monks are somewhere below the social ladder. When the first Christian missionaries went to China, they found out they could get more respect from the Chinese by pretending to be scholars instead of monks. Since the Taiwanese value education over faith, there are no disputes over scientific theories/facts that challenge religion because the Taiwanese are on the side of science. 

儒家思想認為學者是社會聚落中最珍重的, 僧侶在某些情況下在學者之下.  當第一個基督教傳教士來到中國的時候, 他們發現比起原本的僧侶身份,他們能夠藉由假裝自己是學者而獲得更多的尊重. 既然台灣認為教育比信想更有價值. 所以在科學理論挑戰宗教信仰的時候自然不會產生爭議, 因為台灣人是站在科學這一邊的.

*No Western obsession with the Truth 

"沒有西方式的狂樂真理"

Now you are probably wondering, if the Taiwanese value science over religion, shouldn't all the Taiwanese be atheists? Why does the Taiwanese still pray to the Land Grandpa God when they know, from science, that no supernatural being exists underneath the earth? Well, it is because the Taiwanese approach to reality is a bit different from Westerners. 

現在你可能會思考, 如果台灣人認為科學價值高於宗教, 那台灣人都是無神論者嗎? 為啥台灣人仍然對土地公祈禱? ,雖然台灣人知道從科學理論來說, 土地下是沒有超自然個體存在的.  恩, 這是因為台灣人在"接近"真理上與西方人有很大的不同.

Westerners are really really crazy about the perfect, absolute, infallible truth (the ironic thing is, in the search for the perfect truth, Westerners actually know less...). Western philosophy thinks there is only one right answer, like if answer A and answer B contradicts each other, either answer A or answer B is right (or both answers are wrong). With this narrow mindset, it is easy to see how religion and science are in conflict in the West. In the Western mindset, the Theory of Evolution cannot exist side by side with Adam and Eve. Either science or religion is wrong, they can not both be right. 

西方人非常非常對於完美,純粹,無過失的真理瘋狂. (諷刺的是在越是在追尋真理的路上前進, 西方人事實上知道的越少)  西方哲學認為只有一個真理. 如果答案 A與 B是互相排斥的, 那唯有答案A 或是 答案B是正確的(或是兩個都是錯的). 所以狹窄的心態造成宗教與科學在西方思想上互相衝突.  在西方的思維上, 天演論與亞當夏娃是不可以共存. 不是科學就是宗教有錯, 不可能兩者同時正確.

Well, in Taiwan, it is a bit different. I don't know how to explain it but the Taiwanese are perfectly okay with worshiping their idols and studying science at the same time. They are aware of the contradiction between science and religion but they just don't really care about it. I guess a good way to explain it is the Ying Yang. The Taiwanese thinks opposing forces need to be balanced in order to create harmony, such as balancing idealism with realism, individuality with community, and lastly, science with religion. Instead of picking one answer over another, the Taiwanese picks both answers at the same time. Since the Taiwanese are comfortable with duality/contradictions/hypocrisy, there is no conflict between religion and science in Taiwan. 

恩 台灣就有點不同了. 我不知道怎麼解釋, 但是台灣是完全OK同時崇拜偶像與研究科學.  台灣人有意識到宗教與科學答案互相衝突, 但是台灣人就是不太在意. 我猜一個好的解釋可能是 "陰與陽". 台灣認為相法的力道需要平衡以創造和諧, 例如平衡理想與現實, 群體與個人, 還有 科學與宗教. 與其只選擇一邊正確的答案, 台灣人同時選擇了兩個答案. 既然台灣人很習慣於雙重性/衝突性/偽善性((譯按:我記得這個只有這個意思,這是很負面的字,我很驚訝我堂弟用了這個字), 所以宗教與科學在台灣就沒有衝突.

*Religious practices have become rituals and traditions in Taiwan 

"宗教行為在台灣已經成為儀式或是傳統"

Religious practices are so ingrained into Taiwanese culture that they have become rituals and traditions. Even though I am an atheist, I still participate in Taiwanese religious practices to be and feel Taiwanese. I guess it is like the English sayings "bless you, oh my god, hell nawwwwww, and holy shit", those phrases are technically religious but are so absorbed into American culture that they have become secular.

宗教行為已經根深蒂固的進入台灣文化, 已經成為儀式與傳統.  即使我是一個無神論者((譯按:我很驚訝 囧) 我依然參與台灣宗教行為以存在且感覺身為台灣人. 我猜這就像是英文習語常說 " 保佑你. 我的老天爺阿. 下地獄(譯按:不確定) 還有 神聖的大便 XD" 這些名詞雖然在技術上屬於宗教,但是已經相當的世俗性,已經被吸收進入美國文化.

that is all for now. I left out a big chunk about how the religions themselves, Buddhism/Daoism and Christianity, are very different. Like Buddhism is about finding happiness on earth and is non expansionary, while Christianity is about finding happiness in the after life and is expansionary. 

現在就這樣吧. 我留下一打有關宗教本身的問題.  佛道教與基督教有很大的差異. 例如佛教是要追尋活在地球上的快樂,而且不具有擴張性. 而基督教本身在於追求身後(死後)的快樂, 而且是擴張性的..
