When the republicans made it about moral decisions related to religion and center it on homosexuality and abortion issues, that changed everything.
My grandpa, who lived in Texas at the time, was so annoyed he stopped voting republican after having done so his whole life. He believed in separation of church and state and was disgusted by the incredibly obvious ploy the republicans were making. Obviously, he was in the minority in this.
