此歌的背景:
從歌詞裡可以明確感受到是十字軍，但是屬於路易九世所發動的第七次，與第八次東征，不過前次目標均是處於馬穆路克王朝(Mamluk)統治下的埃及首都開羅，而第八次則是針對突尼西亞的哈夫斯王朝(Hafsid)，前一次借道塞浦路斯入侵，後一次則借道西西里入侵突尼西亞，但兩次均功敗垂成，此歌應在講述跟隨聖路易征服異教徒的過程，歌詞中也提到了西奈山(位於埃及東部)，以及摩爾人，薩拉遜人，又講述了摩西開紅海，淹沒了法老追兵的故事，應是將兩次東征的事跡合一所致。
