【Alexander Hamilton】The Election of 1800（1800年美國總統大選）

The Election of 1800是音樂劇 Alexander Hamilton 第2幕第19首歌，講述美國第四次總統大選的拉鋸戰，歷經35輪投票仍無結果後，Hamilton出面遊說黨員，最終由Jefferson勝出成為第四任總統。

至於為什麼會出現這樣的拉鋸戰呢？要從美國兩黨制的出現與選舉制度慢慢說起。

兩黨制的雛形

雖然美國首任總統Washington非常討厭黨派，但隨著統治理念的差異，美國政壇逐漸出現了追隨當時財政部長Alexander Hamilton理念的一群人，以及追隨當時國務卿Thomas Jefferson理念的另一群人。起初美國並無黨派概念，兩群人也無嚴謹的群體架構，只不過是「Hamilton的小圈圈」和「Jefferson的小圈圈」而已，後來才漸漸演變成聯邦黨（Federalist）與民主共和黨（Democratic-Republican）。

身為財政部長，Hamilton致力於推動國家銀行和財政政策，因此聯邦黨強調中央權力，應發展國債、國軍等以中央政府力量保護國家，並認為國家應該由菁英和資產階級主導，支持者多為中產階級與商人；Jefferson則反對中央集權，擔心會造成皇權復辟，因此民主共和黨支持將權力下放給州政府，支持者多為農民與工人。

美國總統選舉制度
起初美國選舉制度並未將總統與副總統分開投票，每位選舉人皆有兩張總統選票，最終得票數最高的候選人擔任總統，次高者擔任副總統。在第四次大選前，可以看到並無明顯的政黨傾向，且正副總統有明顯的票數差異。

然而到了第四次總統大選，可以看到基本上選舉人的兩張選票均會投給同一政黨的人。此時更是發生了意想不到的事---原先民主共和黨的策略是讓其中一個選舉人放棄一張選票只投給Jefferson，使Jefferson當選總統，但不知道協調出了什麼差錯，竟讓Jefferson和Burr平票(均為73票)。

1800年各州選舉人投票結果

依據當時憲法規定，候選人平票的話需改由眾議院從中選出總統，然而當時眾議院由聯邦黨主導，部分聯邦黨成員視Jefferson為死敵，無論如何也不願意投給他；也有聯邦黨成員認為Burr立場較不極端而投給Burr，造成眾議院投了35輪後，始終無候選人達絕對多數而勝出。

這時，Hamilton出面遊說自己的聯邦黨員，他認為雖然Jefferson和自己理念不同，但他仍是個有理念的人，與其投給毫無理念與立場的Burr，不如投給Jefferson，因此在第36次投票後，Jefferson終於從中勝出。而在這次大選後，美國也修正了選舉制度的漏洞，改為選舉人一張總統票與一張副總統票。

這件事也成為日後Burr和Hamilton決鬥的導火線，Hamilton在決鬥中被Burr射殺，Burr則是身敗名裂，兩位才華洋溢的開國英雄就此殞落。聯邦黨在這次選舉中失利，重要領導人消亡加上反戰立場在1812年美英戰爭飽受批評後，也逐漸走入歷史。
